Pat is a great advocate to bring new jobs to Ward 9. In the past 5 years over 1 million square feet of new office and distribution facilities has been built and numerous small businesses have opened. These include major companies such as Ikea and BMW, Lululemon and Cabana Coast distribution centres as well as the Cognizant Regional Delivery Centre. These companies bring thousands of new jobs to our community.
As an active voice on the City’s Economic Development Advisory Board, Pat has worked on a youth employment strategy that will ensure youth are well trained for the workforce and know how to find jobs.
Mississauga’s strength is in our workforce. It is our people who attract business to the city and Pat works to ensure that business, education and government work together to build and support that workforce.
As Chair of Mississauga’s Tourism Board since its inception, Pat has encouraged the growth of the tourism sector in our city. Due to her efforts and with the support of a strong board, Pat has helped Mississauga grow to become a popular destination for tourists. This supports our hospitality industry such as hotels, restaurants, retail as well as our arts, culture and sports. Pat played an integral role in getting the hotel tourism tax implemented this year. This will bring in an estimated additional $10 million to the city. It will remove all tourism costs including festival support from the property taxes and the benefits will be seen in the 2019 budget. This is the first new revenue the city has seen in years.
In 2014 Pat promised to try to increase the dividend the city received from Enersource (Hydro Mississauga). As a member of the Enersource Board, she worked with staff and the board to make that happen through a merger with other utilities that resulted in forming a larger company. The end result will be a big increase in the future dividends the city receives from our utility.
